The Hobbit/Return of the King Bilbo and Gollum Production Cel Setup (Rankin/Bass, 1977/80). Rankin/Bass Studio produced two of J. R. R. Tolkien's books, The Hobbit and a sequel Return of the King: A Story of the Hobbits for Television. The Hobbit was particularly well received by critics and declared one of the most comprehensive versions of Tolkien's first book in his Middle-Earth canon. Offered in this lot are a pair of production cels combined from both of these rare films. Both are hand-painted 10 field production cels with full figure images of these famous adversaries. The image of Bilbo measures 4" tall and Gollum 2.5". This rare animation art mash-up is presented over a print background for presentation purposes. Both of these animated TV specials were produced on tight budgets with very limited animation making art from either scarce. A setup composed of art from both that works well together is a real find. The art is in a 20" x 16" frame under Plexiglas with a mat opening of 13" x 9". Condition is Very Good and the frame is sold as-is.
