Description

The Gumps Production Cel (Paramount, c. 1920s). Sidney Smith's comic strip about a middle class family launched on 2/12/17 and ran through 1959. The family consisted of chinless Andy Gump, his wife Min, and sons Sam and Baby James. It became immediately popular, spawning a series of animated cartoon shorts beginning in 1920 as well as live-action films. William A. Carlson produced and directed these 2-minute cartoons, most written by Sidney Smith himself. The series was produced from 1920 to 1928. This is a rare full 12 field nitrate cel from this series. The cameraman, camera, trees and clouds in the background are hand-drawn; the four other characters (including Andy and Min) are all hand-inked and painted on cel. The image sizes are 5" to 6". Matted with an opening of 11" x 9" and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 16.5" x 14.5". One of the rarest pieces of animation art we have ever come across! Frame is sold as-is, cel condition is Very Good.
