Description
The Great Mouse Detective Ratigan Production Cel (Walt Disney, 1986). In this original production cel, Ratigan demonstrates to Flaversham the toymaker what will happen to his daughter Olivia if his demands are not met. Based on the children's book series Basil of Baker Street by Eve Titus, this film draws heavily on the tradition of Sherlock Holmes with a heroic mouse who consciously emulates the detective. This film received positive reviews and financial success, in sharp contrast to the box office under-performance of Disney's previous animated feature film The Black Cauldron. As a result, the company became convinced that their animation department was still a viable enterprise which set the stage for the Disney Renaissance. This is an original hand-painted 16 field production cel of arch villain Ratigan crushing a toy ballerina from the 11:22 mark in the film. The character image measures an incredible 8" x 8" and is over a print background for presentation purposes. The cel bears a Disney seal in the lower left and comes with a Disney Certificate of Authenticity on back of the frame. The art is framed under Plexiglas with a mat opening of 12" x 9" in an 18.5" x 15.5" frame. Cels of this era were laminated by the studio to help preserve them. Condition is Very Good.
