Description

The Friendly Ghost (First Casper Cartoon) Haunted House Background Original Art by Shane Miller (Famous Studio, 1945). The old, dark abandoned house we see at the beginning of this historic cartoon opens to find Casper in his very first appearance. Here is that house in an original hand-painted/airbrushed painting used in the film. Although it may seem strange now to think of the ghost of a dead child becoming an iconic and much-loved cartoon character, Casper was a big hit right from the start. The Friendly Ghost was intended to be a one-shot Noveltoon release, but two more followed; by the fourth cartoon, Casper's Spree Under the Sea, Casper's series officially began. Shane Miller painted this moody, shadow-filled image (that appears much darker in online prints), which can first be seen at the 0:52 timestamp; the camera pans up to the right, stopping at the 0:58 mark. It's painted with gouache and airbrush on skimmed illustration board measuring approximately 17" x 13.25"; the angled illustration is 21" from the bottom left corner to the upper right corner. Condition is Very Good with minor handling and edge wear in the outer borders.
From the Mike Glad Museum Collection.
