The Band Concert Clarabelle Cow Production Cel and Custom Painted Background Setup (Walt Disney, 1935). One of the most important Mickey Mouse films was The Band Concert. It was Mickey Mouse's first color cartoon, and considered one of his greatest hits. Directed by Wilfred Jackson, it was released on 2/23/35. This is a hand-inked, hand-painted production cel of Clarabelle Cow playing her flute. From about 7:45 into the short, when the tornado lifts the band up into the air, she is dropped into a baby carriage in a tree and continues to perform on her flute. The bird nest has not yet landed on her head! Clarabelle is 6" long and placed on a custom hand-painted background made for presentation purposes. It is beautifully matted with an image area of 11.75" x 9". Cels from this short are very hard to find, and this one is exceptional in its energy and pose! Glass front framed to 23" x 21" and in Fine condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
