Description
Superman "Jungle Drums" Master Background Signed by Robert Little (Famous Studios, 1943). "To your posts!" From the fifteenth entry in the Man of Steel's very first animated series, Jungle Drums, comes this original Master background featuring a Nazi stronghold in the jungle created by scenic and background artist Robert Little. Little (1902 - 1994) is known for his work under both Fleischer and later Famous studios, contributing to story as well as background art for the theatrical Superman series that spanned the two studios. This early film series initially premiered under Fleischer in 1941, with the studio completing nine shorts before internal troubles led to the reorganization by parent company Paramount into Famous Studios. The remaining eight shorts produced by Famous delved into World War II propaganda themes, favoring the thwarting of Nazi plots over the science fiction aspects of Fleischer's shorts. Jungle Drums released on March 26, 1943, and saw Lois Lane as the sole survivor of a Nazi-downed Allied plane crashed in the African jungle. This stunning Master background can be seen beginning near the 2:48 mark just before Lane's plane is shot down. Towering and ominous, the stronghold has been hand-painted in gouache and colored pencil with Little's signature found in the lower right on board trimmed to 8.75" x 11". The artwork is mounted to a 12 field vertically aligned board with pegholes and the graphite notation Jungle Drums along the left edge. The full background piece has been mounted to an additional backing board with an overall size of 12" x 15" and includes a typewritten label featuring the artist and short, but incorrectly attributes it as Fleischer, 1942. With typical handling and edge wear including minor surface wear and remaining tape, overall this expertly foreboding Master background is in Very Good condition.More information about Famous Studios Artist.
