Superhero Painted Publicity/Special Project Cel Group of 5 (DC/Marvel, c. 1980s-90s). This is an unusual but fun group, consisting of hand-painted images of Superman, Batman and Robin, the original Bat-Girl, very early Batman, and Daredevil. These are all made by taking a black and white image from a comic book, doing a Xerox print on special 8.5" x 11" acetate, and hand-painting them like animation cels. The Superman is a 1960s-era Curt Swan drawing, with a figure size of 6.25". Batman and Robin is a great late 1950s-early 1960s image by Dick Sprang; overall image size is 5.5" x 5.25". The early Batman image is actually a panel drawn by Bob Kane from Detective Comics #30 (cover-dated August, 1939), with an image area of 3.75" x 6". The image of Bat-Girl features the "Betty Kane" version, who was originally seen only in six stories, published in 1961-64. Her figure size is 6.75". Finally, the "odd man out" is the Marvel superhero Daredevil, seen here with a figure size of 6.5". The acetate is specially made for copying machines, with a half-inch stripe of white along one side. We're not sure what these "cels" were used for, but for superhero fans they are undeniably cool! Fine condition with very minor handling wear.
