Straight Shooters/Hold That Pose/Father's Weekend Painted Production Background with Mickey Mouse Publicity Cel and Walt Disney Signature (Walt Disney, 1947/50/53). Here's some real Disney history. First, this is a hand-painted 12 field production background of the amusement part that was used and partially re-used in three theatrical shorts, one starring Donald Duck and two featuring Goofy. The art is attributed to Thelma Witmer. It can be seen in the opening of Straight Shooters (1947); at around the 5:28 mark when the bear chases Goofy in to the amusement park in Hold That Pose (1950); and it can be seen around 4:48 when Goofy takes his son to the amusement park in Father's Weekend (1953). The background is mounted to board and trimmed to 13.5" x 11". Here's a fun fact: under the bingo banner is a sign painted "Hench Palace of Pleasure" -- this is a homage to Disney Legend John Hench. The Disney Art Props department has added a great hand-inked hand-panted studio publicity cel of Mickey Mouse holding a bingo card, ready to enter the bingo hall on the background. This is a great image of Mickey, measuring 6.5". The cel is trimmed to image and applied to the production background. This was a studio gift, as the mat is boldly hand-signed by Walt Disney himself. He writes, "To Edith Small Burg With Best Wishes, Walt Disney." This is one of the largest confirmed Walt Disney signatures we have seen, coming in at 6" x 2". A studio sticker is on back of the 18.5" x 17.5" mat. A stunning example of a Studio Art Props Department gift cel setup! The mat is ripped in two places and has old tape, plus handling and edge wear. Cel and background are in Fine condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
