Description
Steamboat Willie Mickey and Minnie Mouse Animation Drawings by Ub Iwerks Group of 2 (Walt Disney, 1928). Mickey and Minnie Mouse made their film debut together and became overnight sensations in Steamboat Willie. The theatrical short premiered at the Colony Theater in New York City on 11/18/28. It was actually the third Mickey short produced by Disney, but Walt's determination to produce one of the first cartoons with synchronized sound meant that it preceded Plane Crazy and Galloping Gaucho both of which had originally been made as silent films. The legendary Ub Iwerks was responsible for most of the direction, animation and character design on these early films and this lot contains two drawings by him for Disney's historic first "talkie." Presented is a nearly matching pair of animation drawings of Mickey and Minnie from Steamboat Willie. The remarkable full-figure graphite images of this world-famous duo stand 3" and 3.5" respectively on seperate 12 field 2-peghole sheets of animation paper. They are a nearly matching pair from the same scene at the 3:47 mark/scene 20. Mickey is hand-numbered 125 in the lower right corner and 123 is stamped in blue ink on back. Minnie is hand-numbered 112 on the lower right front corner and and 122 is stamped in blue ink on back. This is the first time we have ever seen or offered a set of original production drawings of Mickey and Minnie from the same scene in this truly historic animated short. These museum-worthy pieces would easily be the centerpieces of any serious animation collection. Minor handling and toning and a small piece of the top right corner of Minnie's drawing has been torn off. Condition is Very Good for these 92-year old drawings.Auction Info
