    Description

Song of the South Concept Painting by Mary Blair (Walt Disney, 1946). "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, Zippa-Dee- Day, My oh my what a wonderful day!" sings James Basket as Uncle Remus in this Walt Disney feature film that combined live action and animation. Based on Joel Chandler Harris' Uncle Remus stories, it debuted in his home town of Atlanta in 1946. Mary Blair received credit as the Color Stylist on this film and for her backgrounds. In the book The Art and Flair of Mary Blair: An Appreciation by John Canemaker, he writes, "In the fall of 1944, Blair spent a week in Atlanta, and nearby rural Georgia locations doing preliminary research for Song of the South. Her plein air paintings of Georgia cotton fields, dusty red roads, wooden shacks, plantation mansions, and burning sunsets, were adapted in high-key hues, into Song of the South's special effects sequences". This is an over-sized concept painting by Mary Blair (1911-1978) of Uncle Remus as he walks by the homes in the Georgia fields. It is painted in gouache on 14.5" x 17" watercolor board (the image area is 10" by 13.5"). There is tape along the border from a previous framing. "Uncle Remus' Cabin and Favers' House" is written on the bottom border. It is one of the single largest Mary Blair Song of the South paintings we have ever come across. It exhibits minor handling and edge wear; otherwise, condition is Very Good.
