Social Lion Production Cel and Key Master Background (Walt Disney, 1954). This matching hand-inked and hand-painted animation cel painting of the Lion, the cartoon's title character, and original background painting were created in The Walt Disney Studios and photographed together during the production of the Special Cartoon directed by Jack Kinney. Walt Disney's excellent animator Norm Ferguson supervised the animation and Thelma Witmer painted the backgrounds. The Lion is King of Beasts and feared by all in Africa; yet when he is captured, taken to America, and escapes, he finds "the city was not impressed with his highness. No one paid him the slightest attention." After a sly fellow tries to sell him the Brooklyn Bridge, the narrator -- actor Alan Mowbray -- notes: "But the Lion does not need a bridge. He needs a friend." This charming scene comes next in which the Lion cozies up to the stone statue of his kin outside the Public Library. Thelma Witmer joined The Walt Disney Studios in the early 1940s directly into the background department. She received screen credit for the short Donald's Off Day (1944) and her first feature film credit came on Cinderella (1950). She created background art for shorts and features through The Jungle Book (1967). This setup includes a cel of the Lion with an approximate figure size of 7.5"; the Public Library background is painted with watercolor and airbrush, and measures 16" x 12". Setup is in Very Good condition with minor handling and edge wear.
