Sleeping Beauty Princess Aurora, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather Production Cel and Master Background (Walt Disney, 1959). Here is a fantastic production cel setup with a Master background attributed to Eyvind Earle (1916 - 2000). Sleeping Beauty was the 16th animated film from Walt Disney, released on 1/29/59. It was the most expensive Disney film to date with a budget of six million dollars - a mere pittance compared to today's movie budgets. The piece in this lot was initially offered in a New York auction on 12/16/93 as lot number 678. Production notes on the background indicate it's from scene 18, sequence 6. The notations are under the mat, inside the frame and not visible without deframing. A WDP stamp is on the original mat which is also under the existing mat and not visible without deframing the art. The background is attributed to the hand of Disney Legend Inductee, Eyvind Earle, Color Stylist on the film. Other background painters under the supervision of Mr. Earle include; Frank Armitage, Al Dempster, Bill Layne, Dick Anthony, Richard Thomas, Thelma Witmer, Walt Peregoy, Ralph Hulett, Fil Mottola, and Anthony Rizzo. The setup features the Three Good Fairies - Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather along with Briar Rose. The characters are trimmed to image and placed on the background painting of the inside of the woodcutter's cottage. The background is a pan size painting measuring about 26" in a glass-fronted frame of 34" x 20" with a fabric matboard aperture of 25.5" x 11". Frame sold as-is. Artwork condition is Very Good.
