Richard Scarry - Little Golden Book Cover Illustrations Original Art Group of 4 (Simon & Schuster/Western Publishing, 1949-61). What child didn't grow up with at least one storybook written and/or illustrated by this man? Richard Scarry (1919 - 1994), despite his "scary" name, was a hardworking man who spent his long career making children happy with his gentle storybooks, many of them still in print. Here are four pieces of original book cover art by Richard Scarry, including one of the very first books he illustrated - Duck and His Friends (1949), painted edge-to-edge on illustration board measuring 6.75" x 8.5". Next is the cover art to The Gingerbread Man, an adaptation of a classic fairy tale; the Little Golden Book first edition was published in 1953. Image size is 8" x 9.25" on heavy illustration board. Then we have the cover art to My Christmas Book (1957), with a rare combination of human and animal characters, including Santa Claus. The image is within a blue painted field measuring 7.75" x 9.75", with the actual image size 6" x 6". This piece is painted on heavy board, and is lightly sun-struck from an old framing that has slightly faded the blue field. The last piece of cover art is for Good Night, Little Bear, published in 1961; the art image measures 7.5" x 9" on heavy board. All four are painted in gouache, and each is a treasure on its own. Wow! Overall condition is Very Good with minor handling and edge wear.
