Fantastic Planet Terr Cutout Animation Puppet Group of 18 (Les Films Armorial/Studio Jiri Trnka, 1973)....
Description
Fantastic Planet Terr Cutout Animation Puppet Group of 18 (Les Films Armorial/Studio Jiri Trnka, 1973). Directed by René Laloux (1925 - 2004), this surreal cult classic depicts a world in which the giant alien race known as the Draags control the population of the Oms (humans). The film is considered to be an allegory for either human rights, or possibly animal rights, by portraying humans in role of both pets and pests. Acclaimed for its thought-provoking themes and unique animation, Fantastic Planet was awarded the Grand Prix special jury prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival. The film famously employed hand-inked, hand-painted, and hand-cut character puppets for its animation instead of traditional animation cels, and the production process took a decade to complete. These rare original production cutouts can be seen at the 1:03:34 mark of the film. They are attributed to the film's co-writer, production designer, and famed surrealist Roland Topor (1938 - 1997). Production artwork from this lauded sci-fi classic rarely comes to market, making this collection an especially rare treasure. These 18 puppets head/arm elements featuring the protagonist Terr, mounted to a 24.5" x 17.5" black board numbered 974. Overall minor handling and edge wear. An excellent showcase of the meticulous process of animating Fantastic Planet, the condition of this rare find is Very Good.Auction Info
