Description

Fantasia "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" Mickey Mouse Publicity Cel Setup with Studio Custom Painted Background (Walt Disney, 1940). The magical Mickey Mouse is presented in his starring feature film role as "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" from Disney's 1940 musical masterpiece Fantasia in this incredible original publicity cel setup created by the Studio's Art Props Department. Although featured in a pose not seen directly in the musical anthology film's titular segment, this Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey mirrors a known 1940 model drawing that incorporated Fred Moore's updated character design with pupils as well as his image used on countless publicity and merchandise pieces including the one sheet for Fantasia's 1982 digital rerelease which Disney historian John Culhane utilized for the cover of his 1983 book Walt Disney's Fantasia. Featured in a dynamic full-figure, Mickey has been hand-inked and hand-painted to 5.5" x 5.5" having been meticulously trimmed to image and applied to the custom painted background. This setup was prepared by the Studio's Art Props Department as a VIP gift for actress and children's radio show hostess Jane Withers (1926 - 2021). A child star who began her radio career at the young age of only three, Withers would go on to become one of the most popular Hollywood actresses of her age in the 1930s and early 1940s, even starring opposite Shirley Temple. Later she would return to the screen as a character actor in the 1950s, and towards the end of her film career in the 1990s and early 2000s would transition to voice work for animated Disney films. The setup has been framed under glass to an overall size of 23.5" x 19.5" with a mat aperture of 13" x 10.5". The mat also bears a hand-written script noting the film's title along with an Original WDP stamp below the aperture and includes the studio's original CoA, both reminiscent of Disney's first foray into animation as fine art with the Courvoisier Galleries beginning in the late 1930s. With typical handling and edge wear including small spots of linework wear with areas of paint cracking/separation primarily to Mickey's white gloves, overall this absolutely iconically posed Apprentice to Yen Sid is in Good condition. All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition.
