    Description

WWII Insignia "23rd Fighter Squadron" Original Artwork (Walt Disney, c. 1940s). This is the original artwork for the 23rd Fighter Squadron's official insignia. The artwork was created by the Disney Studios. During the second World War Walt Disney converted his new studio in Burbank into a virtual war production plant with an assembly line of military contract work that accounted for 93% of the studio's output between 1942 and 1945. The department was headed by draftsman Hank Porter, whom Walt called a, "one-man art department". The department, which included Mouseketeer, Roy Williams and Disney Legend, Bill Justice, worked steadily throughout the war turning out nearly 1,300 insignias! After the Pearl Harbor Attack, the 23rd Fighter Squadron, the "Fighting Hawks," engaged in antisubmarine warfare against German U-boats. The art was rendered in gouache on 8" x 10" board. We see this piece in the book Characters of War on page 12. Matted to 14" x 14" with an aperture of 7.5" x 7.5". Artwork is in Very Good condition.
