Description
World War II Propaganda Film/Publication Rough Layout Drawings Group of 3 (Walt Disney, c. 1940s). From the personal archive of and attributed to Disney Legend Ken O'Connor (1908 - 1998), comes this trio of rough layout drawings created for one of the many government-contracted WWII propaganda films or publications produced by Disney in the early to mid-1940s. During this time O'Connor continued his expert work as an accomplished layout man and art director at the Disney studio, including contributing to their famous 1943 propaganda film Victory Through Air Power, as well as enlisting to work alongside other prominent Hollywood animators from various studios with Frank Capra on films for the First Motion Picture Unit (aka 18th AAF Base Unit). Disney would also produce a multitude of print items during the War years including customized military insignias, propaganda posters, and a single issue of the intended-periodical Dispatch from Disney's which was distributed to enlisted Studio employees. Likely for a film or possibly a publication, this lot includes a pair of rough layouts depicting a Nazi soldier with a conveyor belt of artillery shells and titled "Production Lines" rendered solely in graphite with varying degrees of detail, alongside an additional graphite rough layout with gouache accents depicting Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Hirohito glaring at a padlocked pair of lips with a title that appears to read either "Live in Silence" or "Believe in Silence". The matching pair of layouts have similar image sizes of approximately 7.5" x 10" on untrimmed sheets of 16 field 5-peghole animation paper, while the gouache-accented layout measures slightly smaller at 7.75" x 9" on a 16 field 5-peghole animation trimmed to 12" x 10". With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning, small areas of smudging, minor corner creasing with small edge tears, and the noted trimming, overall this rough World War II layouts are in Very Good condition.From the Ken O’Connor Archive.
