Word War II Italian POW Donald Duck Original Oil Pastel Drawing, Artist Unknown (1944). This is a truly remarkable piece, not only of animation memorabilia, but of World War II history! Large piece done in cardboard, with what looks like oil sticks, pastels, and watercolor, of Donald Duck (known as Paperino in Italian) done by an Italian POW during wartime; the piece is dated 1944. Donald Duck was always immensely popular in Italy - it's a tribute to the universal appeal of Disney storytelling that an Italian POW chose to pass the time by creating his own take on a piece of American popular culture. This hilarious drawing features Donald standing atop a bar, with a patron (garbed in a VERY stereotypically Italian getup) spitting into a spittoon. Donald's friend wears a wide-brimmed hat which covers his eyes, a huge mustache, suspenders...and an ascot! Two foamy glasses labeled "birra" are out on the bar, ready for Donald and his amico. A small description in graphite is in the top right corner of the piece, which says: "Painted by Italian prisoner of 2n (SIC) World War, 1944". By many reports, life in American-run POW camps wasn't as severe or Spartan as one might think; social activities, sports, and interactions with locals were often encouraged. Here, obviously, art media were provided to the prisoners for their recreational time - with this charming result. Piece measures 24.5" x 18.5". Framed, with glass front. In Fine condition.
