Woodland Café Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1937).
As Snow White's release loomed, the artistic advancements made by the studio became more evident in the shorts it produced, especially in terms of backgrounds and effects animation. This visually lush short was directed by Wilfred Jackson and released on 3/13/37. Animator and Disney Legend Inductee, Ward Kimball worked primarily on the wild, energetic closing band scene, consisting of many fast cuts. With no central character or narrative story arc, the film is instead, an early music video of sorts, in that it provides us with glimpses of as many characters as possible. Woodland Café takes place in a "supper club", with patronage and staff consisting entirely of insects. All the fixtures we are used to seeing in classic Hollywood films are here: a Maître D, a coat-check girl, a band-leader, etc. The film consists largely of inventive sight gags. This fantastic drawing is visually appealing and a solidly-drawn character with a great pose and facial expressions. Woodland Café is a wonderful snapshot of the Disney studio as it was reaching the heights of technical sophistication - and taking its well-earned place as the world's preeminent animation studio. The animation drawing here depicts a cricket playing an upright bass - all decked out in coattails and gloves. The pieces is rendered in graphite on 12 field 5-peghole animation paper. The artwork is in a 22" x 24" frame with a placard reading, "1937 Woodland Café". Frame sold as-is. Very Good condition.
