Winsor McCay Gertie the Dinosaur Animation Drawing (Winsor McCay, 1914). "Take a little drink if you want to." Winsor McCay invites his "pet" dinosaur to take a sip from the lake, but she'll wind up draining it before she quenches her thirst! Gertie is considered by most animation historians to be the very first cartoon superstar. In this original inked production drawing from this historic and important film, she's stretching her long neck out to inspect the water. The ink on rice paper drawing is noted as 21 Drink in the lower right. Although artist Zenas Winsor McCay (1869? - 1934) was best known as a newspaper editorial cartoonist and creator of the celebrated strip Little Nemo in Slumberland, he was also a pioneer in the field of animation. Gertie the Dinosaur, his third cartoon, was done without the help of cels -- the entire short was shot from McCay's inked drawings like this. The film premiered on February 8, 1914 at the Palace Theater in Chicago. The cartoon is ranked #6 in Jerry Beck's book The 50 Greatest Cartoons. The art is on 8.5" x 6.75" rice paper that has been mounted to board measuring 9.25" x 7.25". Glue stains at the corners and edges are visible, but do not impact the powerful image of Gertie. A very nice piece from this rare short! Condition is Very Good.
