    Description

Winsor McCay Gertie the Dinosaur Animation Drawing Original Art (1914). "Gertie will now show that she isn't afraid of me and take me for a ride." Gertie then walks up to an animated Winsor McCay, picks him up with her mouth and places him on her back for a ride. This is an outstanding and important piece of inked artwork from the hand of Winsor McCay (1869-1934), used to create the landmark animated short, Gertie the Dinosaur. McCay drew each individual scene on rice paper by hand; this was before the use of nitrate or acetate cel use began. Gertie, the subject of McCay's third cartoon, was animation's first superstar. This film premiered on February 8, 1914 at the Palace Theater in Chicago. The cartoon is ranked #6 in Jerry Beck's book The 50 Greatest Cartoons. This historic piece is the very first Gertie drawing we have ever offered that has an image of Winsor McCay in the scene. It can be found in the film around the 13:09 mark. Art is in ink on 9" x 7" rice paper mounted to board; the number 309 is inked in bottom right corner. Gertie is 4.5", while Windsor is 3" with his long wand. Matted with an opening of 10" x 8", and framed using Plexiglas for an overall size of 20" x 19". A screen grab print of this artwork is included in the lot. Frame is sold as-is, artwork condition is Very Good.
