Description
What's Opera, Doc? Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny Illustration by Chuck Jones Original Art (Warner Brothers, c. 1990s). "Be my wuv..." sings Elmer as Siegfried to Bugs Bunny as Brünnhilde, in this scintillating original graphite and watercolor illustration by Animation Legend Chuck Jones (1912 - 2002). This 1957 Merrie Melodies short is one of the most celebrated bits of animation ever, ranking #1 in Jerry Beck's quintessential book The 50 Greatest Cartoons. The cartoon is famous for being a true labor of love, requiring six times as much work and expense as an average Chuck Jones short, and that extra effort comes through with every repeat viewing. Elmer, with his inimitable voice and cross-dressing rascal Bugs made the perfect cartoon team, and this short was the pair at their apex. Oddly enough, What's Opera, Doc? would be the final appearance of Elmer in a Chuck Jones-directed cartoon from the Golden Age of Animation. The genius of Chuck Jones comes through with every line in this wonderful piece of art - Elmer's eye's clouded with desire as he leaps toward "Brünnhilde," and Bugs with his feet lifting off the ground, a coy expression on "her" face... wow! A Linda Jones Letter of Authenticity included with the illustration notes this as CJWATER99, meaning this to be the 99th watercolor painting completed by Chuck Jones in this series. We think he really nailed it on this one, a fun image of two of Warner Brothers' biggest animation stars ever in their greatest cartoon roles. The hand-signed art is matted with an opening of 14.5" x 10.5", and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 25.75" x 20.75". The frame is sold as-is. Art condition is Fine.Auction Info
