Water Babies Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1935).
This film was released on May 11, 1935 and was directed by Wilfred Jackson. Art Babbit, Woolie Reitherman, and "Big Roy" Williams (future adult Mouseketeer) contributed animation. The story concerns a group of baby water sprites, who sleep on lily pads at night. They wake for the day and cavort throughout the pond, recruiting the local animals for their games. The even stage a bullfight with a bullfrog, before riding back to the pond and settling in for the night. The film features lush visuals, consisting of gorgeous backgrounds and effects animation. A sequel would be produced in 1938, Merbabies, in a collaboration between Disney and his former employees, Hugh Harman and Rudolph Ising. This drawing can be seen near the 6:05 point in the film; one of the water babies is perched atop a jack-in-the-pulpit and is cheering and applauding the victor of the bullfight - the bullfrog! This delightful animation drawing measures 7.5" high on 12 field 2-peghole animation paper and is rendered in graphite and colored pencil. It has been matted and framed under Plexiglass with a mat opening of 11" x 9" in a 17" x 15" frame; frame is sold as-is. Minor creasing and handling-wear, in Very Good condition.
