Water Babies Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1935).
We have a fantastic piece of animation history in this lot. This drawing is from the Silly Symphony short subject titled, Water Babies, released on May 11, 1935. The Walt Disney Company would produce 75 original animated shorts under the Silly Symphony banner between 1929 and 1939. The short subjects were designed to be whimsical pieces without recurring characters. These short features would help Disney redefine animation in terms of character effects and storytelling. Water Babies begins with several water lilies opening to reveal tiny babies sleeping in each one. The babies immediately awaken and leap into the water. As the babies play, a trumpet sounds and they all ride swans, fish, or leaf boats to the shore. This is an original production drawing from this Silly Symphony cartoon directed by Wilfred Jackson, and released on 5/11/35. The images can be seen around the 3:07 mark in the short. The artwork was created using graphite and colored pencil on 12 field, 2-peghole animation paper. The artwork has normal usage, minor handling and edge wear; condition is Very Good.
