Virgil Ross - The Queen, The Prince, and So White Drawing (Warner Brothers, c. 1990s). This rare illustration by Virgil Ross of characters from the now-censored 1943 cartoon, Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs, requires somewhat of an explanation. The original cartoon short directed by Bob Clampett had its origins in a conversation Mr. Clampett had with the cast of an all-black Off-Broadway musical, Jump For Joy. The question was asked of Bob why there were no blacks in Warner Brother cartoons, which was the inspiration for this jazzy short. Those cast members wound up voicing the characters in this twist on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (although only Mel Blanc received screen credit). Although the short seemed to be well-received by both black and white audiences at the time, the NAACP protested the stereotyped caricatures, and the cartoon was ultimately included in the infamous Censored Eleven. It's still considered by many to be a superb cartoon; it was voted #21 in Jerry Beck's book The 50 Greatest Cartoons. The art is on 12 field animation paper, with image sizes of 5" for the "Mean ol' Queen," 6.5" for "Prince Chawmin" (inspired by Cab Calloway) and 5" for the shapely "So White." Fine condition.More information about Virgil Ross, also known as Ross, Virgil, Virgil Ross.
