    Description

Tortoise Wins By a Hare Bugs Bunny Animation Drawings Sequence of 7 (Warner Brothers, 1944). In this Bob Clampett-directed short based on Tex Avery's Tortoise Beats Hare scenario, Bugs reviews film footage of his previous failure to beat Cecil Tortoise in a race. Afterward he paces the room pondering his next move and these are a sequence of seven rough drawings from that scene at the 1:19 mark. The drawings were created to develop the movement of Bugs' pacing with detail given to the feet and legs rather than the upper body or head. The sequence provides fascinating insight into the animator's process during Warner Brothers' golden age. Each is loosely rendered in graphite on 12 field 2-peghole paper and numbered 1 through 7 in the lower right corner. As an added bonus, the drawings come with a Leon Schlesinger Studio timing chart that indicates that the art was drawn by animator Rev Chaney. Warner Brothers artwork from this era is exceptionally rare and for it to come with provenance revealing the actual animator is rarer still. The group of drawings shows very light handling and condition is Very Good. From the Rev Chaney Archives.
