The Zoot Cat Tom and Jerry - Tom Cat Animation Drawings Sequence of 4 (MGM, 1944). Here's a cool sequence of animation drawings from The Zoot Cat, the 13th Tom and Jerry short, released to theaters on 2/26/1944. Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera directed this short, poking fun at the short-lived "zoot suit" craze. The zoot suit, with its exaggerated details, like high-wasted trousers and a long coat with wide lapels and padded shoulders and worn with a wide brimmed pork-pie hat, were originally worn onstage in the 1930s by band leaders like Cab Calloway before being adopted by young, mostly Latino men during World War II. In this short, Tom whips up a homemade zoot suit to impress his girl, but as usual, he runs afoul of Jerry. In this sequence of four original 12 field animation drawings, zoot-suited Tom chases Jerry into a standing ashtray, seen here in red outline. The sequence begins at about the 4:07 mark in online viewings. The drawings are noted as 105, 108, 109, and 110 in the lower right corners, with art in graphite with red, brown, and green pencils and nice large images. Minor handling wear on all four.
