The Worm Turns Mickey Mouse Animation Drawings Sequence of 3 (Walt Disney, 1937). "Hot dog! It works!" In a scene that would be echoed later that year by the Evil Queen in Snow White, scientist Mickey works in his sinister-looking underground lab. Working among mysterious books and alchemical instruments, he concocts his "Courage Builder" potion. Following a successful test (in which an endangered housefly develops the ability and the nerve to win a fight against a spider), Mickey finds that his potion gives extra strength and confidence to a mouse (?!) to win against a cat, for the cat to win against Pluto, and for Pluto to win against Pete the Dog Catcher. (Ultimately, Mickey's tonic even helps an inanimate fire hydrant to defend itself against Pluto's unwelcome interest!) The titular worm never actually appears in the film; it is merely a poetic title. Directed by Ben Sharpsteen, the short was released on January 2, 1937. Disney greats Ham Luske and Woolie Reitherman both contributed animation. These drawings of Mickey, garbed in a surgeon's smock, apron, and rubber gloves, can be seen at the 1:40 and 2:51 points in the film. In the first drawing, in which he is seen from the waist up, he searches for a worthy subject for his experiment. In the two remaining drawings, he has just watched the diminutive housefly give the spider a real walloping, in a hilarious - and unexpected - action sequence. The bottom drawing has a fine example of a "smear" effect near Mickey's hand and the syringe he holds, used to suggest rapid motion. Standing 3.5" high in the first drawing and nearly 5" in the second and third, Mickey is rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field 5-peghole animation paper. Some slight creasing and toning throughout the sequence. Drawings are in Very Good condition.
