The Vanishing Private Donald Duck Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1942). This wartime short was written by Disney's resident "Duck Man", Carl Barks. It features Donald Duck as Sergeant Pete's long-suffering subordinate, who has been tasked with camouflaging an artillery cannon. His first design (the colors of recently-defeated Lithuania's flag!) is deemed unacceptable so, he goes in search of ideas... Imagine the trouble he gets into when he discovers Top Secret invisible paint! After rendering himself invisible, Donald tortures poor Sergeant Pete to the point of insanity. Here, he whistles "The Army's Not the Army Anymore", as he patrols with a rifle in front of Pete's barred cel, the sergeant begging to be let out of his straitjacket... (Fun fact: At one point in the short, Donald can be heard singing "Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush", in a clever nod to Universal's 1933 film, The Invisible Man, in which Claude Rains sings the same tune!) In this drawing from the last shot in the film, a cheerful-looking Donald stands 5" tall, rifle slung over his shoulder, and dressed in his army uniform (sans pants, per usual...) He is rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field, 5-peghole animation paper. Drawing is in Fine condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
