The Tortoise and the Hare Group of 3 Animation Drawings (Walt Disney, 1935).
"May the best man win..." A modern retelling of the most famous of the Aesop's Fables, this short was so successful that it won the 1934 Oscar for Best Short Subject: Cartoons. The characters made another appearance the following year in Toby Tortoise Returns, in a sequel written by Ward Kimball. This cartoon was released on January 5, 1935. The prolific Wilfred Jackson directs. One of Disney's future Nine Old Men, Eric Larson - among others - contributed animation. The overly-confident wise-guy Max Hare is thought to have inspired the character of Bugs Bunny, who would appear in 1940's A Wild Hare. (Interestingly enough, Max Hare himself was inspired by boxer Max Baer, both in name and personality!) This is an exceptional piece both aesthetically - and historically. Absolutely beautiful animation drawings featuring full-body depictions of the two main characters, from an Oscar-winning short, no less! During this period, the Disney Studios won an Oscar almost every year until the early 1940s; the one received for The Tortoise and the Hare was the third won by the studio. Featured are three stunning drawings, two of Toby Tortoise flanking a center drawing of Max Hare. The two drawings of Toby can be seen near the 4:08 point in the film, during an extended running sequence involving plenty of sight gags depicting the tortoise's ungainly stride. The center drawing of Max can be seen near the 3:28 point, as Max, who had been napping, awakes when Toby "hurries" by. All three drawings are rendered in graphite, with timing notes for the in-between animation drawings written in colored pencil. Toby measures 4" and 4.5" - and Max is 5" tall. All three are matted together and framed under Plexiglass. The two mat openings around the drawings of Toby measure 9.5" x 8" and the mat opening for Max's drawing measures 6.5" x 8.5" in a 35 x 18.5 frame. Frame is sold as-is. In Fine condition.
