The Screwdriver Woody Woodpecker Storyboard Drawings Group of 2 (Walter Lantz, 1941). The version of Woody Woodpecker that premiered in the 1940 Andy Panda short Knock, Knock may have looked a little different from the one we know now, but he was just as screwy then as he ever was! The look he sports here, with a long, sharp beak and stubby legs, was used until he got a redesign in 1944's The Barber of Seville that brought him closer to his now iconic look. This set of storyboard drawings are from The Screwdriver, which was released on 8/11/1941 and marks the last time Woody Woodpecker was voiced by his original voice actor, the great Mel Blanc. Although Blanc left the role after only three films, his quirky laugh and "Guess who?!" catchphrase would go on to become iconic traits of the character. Here we see Woody pulling a prank on a hapless traffic cop, who gets so riled up by the end of the short that he gets committed to a mental hospital, where his caretaker is none other than Woody Woodpecker himself! This rare early Woody Woodpecker art is rendered in graphite with wonderful, vibrant colors on paper that measures 6.25" x 7.25". The pages are lightly numbered 1 and 2 in the lowered right corners. There are pieces of tape on the back of both drawings and small pinholes near the top left and right corners; otherwise Very Good Condition.Auction Info
