Description
The Ren & Stimpy Show Ren and Stimpy Underwear Master Background Layout Drawing (Nickelodeon, c. 1990s). A testament to their memorable and often unpalatably detailed, close-up held backgrounds, offered here is a rare original Master background layout drawing created for an episode of The Ren & Stimpy Show featuring a new-with-tag pair of character underwear. Considered to be one of the progenitor series of the Nicktoons brand, Ren & Stimpy debuted alongside Doug and Rugrats on August 11, 1991. The series was created by John Kricfalusi, and received both widespread critical acclaim and significant controversy for its humor and shock value. One of the unique aspects that the series became known for was its incredibly detailed, often arguably grotesque, hand-painted close-up backgrounds held for several seconds as stand-alone scenes; this background scene style also translated to several later Nicktoons, most notably SpongeBob SquarePants. The layout drawing offered here is for one such background. The image of "BFD" brand underwear (which, in a surprising twists is new with tags) features Ren and Stimpy, and may have been created for one other the other unique establishing features of the show, commercials for fictional products. It has been rendered in graphite and blue pencil on 12 field animation paper to an image area of 10.75" x 7" with dynamic shading throughout and bears the production notes *BG IS SCENE along the top edge and SC/BG 80 in the lower right. The piece has been matted to an overall size of 19.5" x 15.5" with an aperture of 12" x 9.5". With typical studio handling and edge wear including areas of smudging and superficial surface wrinkles, overall this rare and intricate background layout is in Very Good to Fine condition.Auction Info
