The Reluctant Dragon Daisy Duck "Old Masters" Illustration Original Art (Walt Disney, 1938/1941). In 1938, Disney Studio artists John Dunn, Phil Klein, and Ray Patin did a series of "gag" paintings that presented Donald Duck in a series of "Old Masters paintings." These gag drawings were written up in a Chicago Tribune article on June 10, 1945 as "The Disney Gallery of Old Masters: Off Hour Creations of a Famous Studio." They would be shown on-screen in the documentary section ("Behind the Scenes at Disney Studios") of the feature film The Reluctant Dragon. You can see this exact item on the wall of the "Gallery of Old Masters" in Ward Kimball's office, at the 35:45 mark into the film. "Old Masters Daisy" is also seen in the Disneyland episode "A Day in the Life of Donald Duck" as well. These hysterical but detailed mock-paintings of Old World Donalds would be also featured in a April 16, 1945 Life Magazine article called "Speaking of Pictures... Disney's Donald Duck Poses For the Old Masters." The "Daisy Duck" piece is in the article, with the caption "With Slight Changes -- Donald Shows the Rubens Influence." So, this piece was featured in The Reluctant Dragon as well as the Life Magazine article, and on Disney TV! This "painting" is a combination of colored pencil, graphite, and Conte crayon -- a true mixed-media original. Donald (Daisy) Duck in plumed hat measures 14" in this stunning piece of artwork. A copy of the history of this painting with the Life Magazine cover and article is included. Matted with an opening of 12" x 14", and ornately framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 18" x 20". Frame is sold as-is. Artwork condition is Very Good.Auction Info
