The New Car Flip the Frog Animation Drawings Group of 17 (Ub Iwerks/Celebrity Pictures, 1931).
A used car makes like a puppy in a pet store when Flip comes shopping for a new ride, in this short. It was produced and animated by the great Ub Iwerks (1901 - 1971), and released to theaters on 7/25/31. Here's a fantastic and very rare set of drawings of Flip's car as "she" stands on her rear tires, uses a powder puff and applies lipstick, and sashays around in attempt to win Flip over. This is a combination of 17 roughs with a few more detailed production drawings, in graphite on 12 field 2-peghole animation paper; two of the drawings have added red pencil highlights. One even has a sketched-in version of rarely-seen early 1930s Columbia cartoon character Toby the Pup! As Ub himself has been credited with animating the short, we believe the rough drawings may be from his hand; Grim Natwick, who supposedly redesigned Flip into a more human-like character may also have worked on these. At any rate, it's a cool collection of some of the rarest animation art we've seen in some time. Paper shows some minor toning, with handling and edge wear, and a few minor stains; overall condition is Good.
