The Mail Pilot Mickey Mouse and Pete Animation Drawings Sequence of 3 (Walt Disney, 1933). This Dave Hand-directed short has proven to be one of the most popular early Mickey Mouse theatrical cartoons. The plot is of brave airplane pilot Mickey, who must get a chest of money delivered; he battles rain, lightning, and snow, a treacherous mountain passage, and, of course, air pirate Pete, who attacks with a machine gun and a harpoon cannon. The story was adapted to the Mickey Mouse newspaper comic strip and a Big Little Book, and was infamously parodied in a 1971 Underground comic book. Here are three spectacular original 12 field animation drawings from the fight scene between Mickey and Pete. There are two drawings of Pete in his plane; the first occurs at the 6:17 mark, when Pete has just hooked Mickey's plane with a roped harpoon. Art is in graphite, with an overall image size of 4.25" for Pete and his plane, 11" including the rope. In the next drawing, noted as 89, Pete tries to pull both planes up, but the plucky mouse uses the rope to drag Pete down to the ground; it comes at the 6:18 mark. Art is in graphite with yellow, green, and blue pencil highlights; Pete and plane measure 6" x 7.25", with an overall image size of 11.5" x 7.25, including the rope and puffs of smoke from the plane's exhaust. The final drawing, seen at the 6:44 mark, is numbered 28, and it shows Mickey landing his plane after dragging Pete through a bell tower steeple (which destroys his plane). The art is in graphite with added red pencil highlights, and has a fantastic, well-centered image of Mickey and airplane measuring 9" x 4.5" with rope and smoke. Wow! Mild paper toning with handling wear, including a tiny edge tear on Mickey's drawing and a small amount of moisture damage on one of the Pete drawings (neither near the images).
