The Flying Mouse Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1934). A young mouse saves a fairy who is in danger; his wish for wings is granted by the grateful fairy. Unfortunately, he learns that the wings frighten those that he loves - and make him an object of ridicule as well! The moral of this film is somewhat similar to "The Monkey's Paw", though somewhat less sinister: be careful what you wish for! This cartoon was released on July 14, 1934. It was directed by David Hand and featured animation by Disney great Ham Luske. It has been reported that this is the cartoon which prompted a young Frank Thomas to apply at the studio! The film was remarkable in a number of ways. It was one of the first attempts by the Disney staff to depict a convincing human female on-screen. The Butterfly Fairy would soon be followed by Persephone in The Goddess of Spring, and ultimately, by Snow White herself! The Butterfly Fairy may even have inspired the Blue Fairy in 1940's Pinocchio. The use of color in backgrounds to convey the passage of time (over the course of a day) was also groundbreaking, as the Technicolor film process was still very new, and was not widely-used. This drawing can be seen at the 8:05 point in the film. The flying mouse jumps back in surprise as the Butterfly Fairy appears for a second time, to undo his wish - and return him to his original form. A nice full-body image of the winged character, with a much more naturalistic character design than another famous studio Mouse - and a masterful study in character animation. Artwork from this seminal film is very rare! Our titular mouse is rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field 2-peghole paper (Disney would not adopt the 5-peghole system until a little later). The character measures 4" high. The piece is matted and framed under Plexiglass with a mat opening of 10" x 8" in a 16" x 14" frame. Frame sold as-is. Minor handling wear and creasing. In Fine condition.
