    Description

The Flintstones First Episode "The Swimming Pool" Fred and Barney Storyboard Lot of 2 (Hanna-Barbera, 1960). Almost unbelievably, we have two storyboards from the very first episode of the Flintstones, "The Swimming Pool" which aired on May 1, 1960. In Joe Barbera's book My Life in Toons he talks about taping up these boards to pitch to R.J. Reynolds and Mile Laboratory for sponsorship, to get the show on the air. In one pitch, he didn't use his customary thumb tacks and used tape. Minutes before the pitch, all the tape gave loose. Here is a great four panel gag of Fred and Barney, done for the first historic episode. You can see Joe's thumb tack holes in all four corners. These are panels 180, 181, 182 and 183. A great pool gag from one of our favorite episodes! Panel #181 is hand-signed by the late great Joe Barbera. The two 4.5" x 12" panels are done in graphite with red pencil -- a real piece of animation and pop culture history!
