The Cat Concerto Preliminary Title Card Layout Drawing (MGM, 1946/47). A rare look at the development of the Academy Award-winning Tom and Jerry short The Cat Concerto is presented in this original preliminary layout drawing for the one-reel's title card. Although this iconic film saw a general release on April 26, 1947, an early showing allowed for it to qualify for nomination at the 19th Annual Academy Awards where it would go on to take home the OSCAR® for Best Short Subject: Cartoon about a month prior to its general release. Even today it remains widely considered one of the best Tom and Jerry films of all time, and was even ranked #42 in Jerry Beck's 50 Greatest Cartoons of All Time (Turner Publishing, 1994) as voted on by 1,000 animation professionals. Though this is likely a preliminary layout due to the minor title difference (possessive form of Cat's), the short did receive an unusually quick reissue upon its Academy win complete with a new title card boasting the award. This early layout has been masterfully rendered in graphite with stunning colored pencil shading to a frame-filling image area of 11" x 8" spanning the majority of the 12 field animation sheet crediting William Hanna and Joseph Barbera as directors. An image of this very layout, along with photos of other early Tom and Jerry production art, could even be found on Cartoon Network's website in the 2000s. With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning, corner creasing, and edge/peghole tearing, overall this rare title card layout is in Good condition.Auction Info
