Description
The Brave Engineer RARE Casey Jones Nearly Complete Original Pastel Storyboard Set with Studio Print Binder Pair (Walt Disney, 1950). "Come all you rounders if you wanna hear, the story all about a brave engineer- Casey Jones was the rounder's name, on a high right wheeler, he won his fame!" From Walt Disney's stylized retelling of Eddie Newton and T. Lawrence Seibert's famous "Ballad of Casey Jones" comes this monumental and nearly complete collection of original pastel storyboards for The Brave Engineer. Walt was never secretive with his love of trains, so it's little surprise that his studio adapted this tale of the legendary conductor. The short debuted on March 3, 1950 (50 years after the real Casey's final ride), under the direction of Jack Kinney with story by Dick Kinney and Dick Shaw. The 269 individual storyboards in this lot are hand-drawn in pastel on sheets measuring approximately 8" x 6" which exhibit perforation on their left or right edges, save 2 which are instead rendered on black paper of similar size (sc 88 and 91). The storyboards are loosely tape-mounted to 133 sheets of 12 field 5-peghole animation paper, with most pages including multiple drawings in some cases up to 6! The first page bears the original working title of "Casey Jones" with the remaining pages numbered by scene from 1 through 146; only fourteen scenes are not included in this phenomenally comprehensive collection. Accompanying the original storyboards are a pair of bradded binders which feature over 200 5" x 3.5" photographs matching the storyboards and scene descriptions with "Casey Jones" hand-written along both spines. This rare and incredible lot gives an inclusive look into the production and development of this iconic and comedically madcap railway short. The individual storyboards exhibit corner pinholes and minor smudging throughout; the mounting sheets exhibit minor corner/edge tears and folds; the binders exhibit minor surface wear with detachment of a few photos. Including typical handling and edge wear, overall this grand and nearly complete rare collection of original Brave Engineer storyboards is in Good to Very Good condition. From the Mike Glad Museum Collection.
