Description

Swiss Family Robinson Production Concept Illustration on 34" Board by Disney Legend Peter Ellenshaw (Walt Disney, 1960). This is a very rare piece! This is the original concept art for the opening shipwreck sequence in Swiss Family Robinson by Peter Ellenshaw (1913 - 2007). In the book, "Ellenshaw Under Glass" on page 177 Peter states that he showed this piece to Walt Disney who responded, "Fine ...if you can pull it off!" It's a dramatic image rendered in acrylic on 34" x 14.5" board. The Disney Legend began his long career as a movie studio matte painter in 1934 as an assistant matte painter on United Artists' The Scarlet Pimpernel. Born in London in 1913, Peter Ellenshaw's artistic career spanned more than seven decades. As a young man, he met the British portrait painter, W. Percy Day, who was instrumental in developing the highly demanding technique of matte painting. A matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant location that allows filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that is not present at the filming location. Peter Ellenshaw was a master at this process. With well over 50 films to his credit, Peter would receive five Academy Award® nominations, taking home the coveted OSCAR® for his stunning recreation of Edwardian London in Walt Disney's, Mary Poppins. Ellenshaw's film credits include, The Thief of Bagdad (1940), Treasure Island (1950), Spartacus (1960), The Love Bug (1968), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1968), The Black Hole (1979), and Dick Tracy (1990). Ellenshaw has received numerous awards from many prestigious institutions. Among them the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the American Film Institute in Chicago. In 1993 Ellenshaw was inducted into Disney's hall of fame program as an official Disney Legend. In 2017 Peter Ellenshaw was posthumously inducted in the Visual Effects Society's hall of fame. He also has the distinction of having his name appear in a window on Main Street in Disneyland an honor bestowed upon only a few who help create the magic. This extraordinary painting is signed by the artist, matted to 40" x 20" and presents in Very Good condition.
