Description
Swamp Ghost WWII B-17 Nose Art Original Illustration (Walt Disney, 2015). Presented is a fantastic original illustration by the hand of Disney director Mike Gabriel (The Rescuers Down Under, Pocahontas), created in honor of the WWII B-17 "Flying Fortress" affectionately named Swamp Ghost. This piece was created in 2015 for the Pacific Aviation Museum as part of an exhibit showcasing the newly salvaged plane, kept in its "as-is" condition since 2014. The story of the Swamp Ghost is fascinating; the plane ran out of fuel during a mission and had to crash land in a jungle swamp in the Papua New Guinea area in 1942. All the men walked away from the plane unharmed and survived the arduous trek to safety. The Swamp Ghost never received an honorary name or piece of nose art (that usually happened after a few missions), and it was thought lost until it was spotted by a Royal Australian Air Force helicopter in 1972. The plane was only carefully extracted from the swamp decades later and brought to the Pacific Aviation Museum where Mike Gabriel was commissioned to create honorary nose art. He collaborated with fellow Disney artist Klay Hall, saying "My fervent hope was to do honor to the insignia and nose artwork that the Disney artists created back in the 1940s during the war, by doing a Swamp Ghost design that was totally convincing to the time in which the Swamp Ghost was flying. Klay and I analyzed every aspect of the nose art designs that were created to try and convincingly capture the look, feel, and colors of the time[...]" This exemplary piece is rendered in gouache on watercolor paper, showcasing an excellent image of Donald Duck in the tradition of the 1940s WWII nose art and insignia designs by the Walt Disney Studio. The piece measures a massive 24" x 18", showing minimal handling and edge wear with light spots of paint debris near edges. The condition of this unique gem is Very Good. From the Disney Feature Animation Director Mike Gabriel Collection.
