Description
Society Dog Show Mickey and Pluto Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1939). "Don't worry judge! He won't bite!" Mickey will try anything to get Pluto into this ritzy dog show - including improvising a pair of roller skates to strap on his hapless canine friend. After being shown the door, Pluto ends up saving the day. A clumsy photographer starts a fire and, in a thrilling climax featuring some dynamite animation, Pluto makes a harrowing rescue - saving his crush, Fifi the Peke. Many Disney greats worked on this short, including Shamus Culhane, Fred Moore, John Lounsbery, and Norm Ferguson, and it certainly shows in the results! Bill Roberts directs. Released on February 3rd, 1939, this short was the last to feature Mickey's pie-eyed design; for his next outing, Mickey's Surprise Party, he would receive an updated look, now familiar to legions of moviegoers. After suffering numerous indignities at the hands of rather brusque judge, Pluto finally loses his temper, and ends up ripping the seat out of the snobby judge's pants! This hilarious drawing can be seen at the 5:30 point in the film, during which Mickey, grinning sheepishly, attempts to wrest his furious canine companion away from the carnage. This drawing is a perfect example of the "decisive moment" story-telling quality so highly sought after by collectors - in which the essence of the short is perfectly captured through staging and artistry. Both characters are rendered in graphite and colored pencil. The image area measures roughly 6.5" x 5" on 12 field 5-peghole animation paper. Very minor creasing throughout drawing.
