Snow White Old Hag Color Model/Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1937).
"There must be something...your little heart desires." This film, the first feature-length cel animated film, almost didn't happen. Walt had to fight to inspire confidence in his vision - which ultimately changed cinema history forever. This particular drawing comes from an important sequence in cinema history. The death of Snow White, whom the audience had grown to love, brought a degree of pathos to animation which filmgoers were unaccustomed to seeing. With the film, Disney proved that animation could affect audiences as deeply as any live action film could. Not simply an artistic achievement (though this was certainly important), perhaps what this feature did best was to advance the art of story in the animated film. The Disney story men really came into their own with this release; this was largely due to Walt's close personal involvement in story sessions. This is a truly iconic pose, of an iconic character - the Evil Queen, transformed into an ugly old witch, menacingly offers her poisoned apple to Snow White. When one thinks of the film, this is one of the scenes that instantly comes to mind. The drawing may have served double duty, both as an original animation drawing, and also as a color model drawing, made for use by the Ink and Paint Department; color call outs have been penciled in surrounding the figure of the witch. She measures 6" tall, and is rendered in graphite and colored pencil. The drawing itself is exceptionally large; most animation drawings at the time were done on 12 field (12" x 10.5") paper. It has been matted and framed under Plexiglass, with a mat opening of 15" x 11.5" in a 25" x 22" frame. Frame is sold as-is. Drawing is in Fine condition.
