Snow White Dopey Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1937).
They rarely get more iconic than this! This rough animation drawing is taken directly from Dopey's first-ever on-screen appearance - literally, the first shot in which he appears! The Dwarfs are singing the intro to "Heigh Ho" as they prepare to leave the diamond mines for the day. Doc looks through his jeweler's eyepiece and taps each mined jewel to listen for the clarity of tone; those which sound "flat" when they are struck with his mallet are tossed away. With a jaunty double-bounce walk in time to the music, Dopey carries the dustpan and the rejected jewels over to a trash heap. In their "unpolished" state, rough animation resembles gesture drawing, primarily concerned with accurately depicting movement rather than detail. Upon refinement by the clean-up artists, the outlines would be sharpened and details added. Rough animation drawings are not as often seen at auction, though they are highly prized and sought after by collectors. Rough animation drawings capture the dynamism and immediacy of the original animator's artistic talent - which can sometimes be watered down in clean up. You couldn't ask for a more ideal pose of Dopey! With wide-open eyes and a big grin on his face, Dopey stands nearly 5" tall. This full-body depiction of the character is rendered entirely in graphite on 12 field 5-peghole animation paper. The drawing is matted and framed under Plexiglass with a mat opening of 12" x 10.5" in a 20" x 18" frame; frame is sold as-is. Light toning of paper and minor handling/creasing. In Very Good condition.
