    Description

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Witch/Evil Queen Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1937). "Now, make a wish - and take a bite!" Developed by character designer/story artist (and Disney Legend), Joe Grant, the character of the Evil Queen remains one of the scariest Disney villains, even more than 80 years later! Influenced by many of the glamorous and brooding femme fatales of the day, the queen was largely animated by the great Art Babbit. In early story drafts, her character was originally intended to have a more comical disposition. The story men eventually reached the conclusion that in order for her to provide the necessary air of menace to sustain a feature-length dramatic film, she would have to be much more serious and threatening. Though criticized (at the time) for the frightful depiction of the Queen, Walt was a firm believer in the necessity of a powerful villain; her character is undoubtedly one reason the film has stood up to the test of time. In both forms (beautiful sorceress and wicked old crone) the Queen was voiced by veteran radio actress Lucille La Verne - who simply removed her dentures to provide the voice for the Witch. In this drawing, the Witch measures nearly 5.5" tall and is rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 16-field 5-peghole animation paper. It can be seen at the point near the climax, when the Queen is wearing down Snow White's resistance - and enticing the Princess to make a wish for her Prince. As she tempts the naïve Snow White, she says "There must be something your little heart desires." Minor toning and wrinkling throughout paper (image unaffected). In Very Good condition.
