Description

Sleeping Beauty Maleficent Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1959). "What a pity Prince Phillip can't be here to enjoy the celebration." The wicked enchantress Maleficent strikes an elegant pose in this original animation drawing. Produced over 65 years ago for Walt Disney's sixteenth feature length animated film, this piece is masterfully rendered in graphite with a few color pencil accents on her dress skirt on 16-field animation paper. This remarkable image can be found in the final film near the 1:01:20 timestamp of the movie as she stands up from her throne to visit Prince Philip in her dungeon. Maleficent's animation direction was led by one of "Walt's Nine Old Men", Marc Davis, who was also described by Walt Disney as a "Renaissance man" for his ability to master story, character, animation, and show design. Adding further to her iconic character, Maleficent's menacing poised voice was provided by Eleanor Audley (1905 - 1991), the same actress who voiced Lady Tremaine in Cinderella. The drawing measures an approximate image size of 10.25" x 8" and is numbered 137 in the bottom right corner. The sheet has two reinforced pegholes and light age-related toning. With minor handling and edge wear from production, the lot is in Very Good condition.
