Description
Sleeping Baby Portrait Illustration by Helen Schad Original Art (Samuel Lowe, c. 1940s-50s). Discovered alongside a wealth of original children's book artwork in the Samuel Lowe archives was a collection of baby portraits by midcentury artist Helen Schad. Having also illustrated multiple young children's books in the 1950s, Schad is better known for her portraits of infants rendered in pastel which were often used in calendars. Although this piece is not signed by Schad, the darling illustration is presented in her traditional style. Rendered in her usual pastel on vellum paper, the sleeping babe is matted to 11.75" x 16.75" under protective acetate with an overall mat size of 20" x 25.5". The pastel has transferred slightly to the facing side of the acetate and the outer edges of the mat show signs of smoke shadows from an old warehouse fire, however the artwork remains unaffected. With typical handling and edge wear the artwork is in Very Good condition. From the Samuel Lowe Company Archives.Auction Info
