    Description

Silly Symphony - The Spider and the Fly Background Layout Drawing (Walt Disney, 1931).
Following the release in 1928 of Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie, the restless innovator wanted to push the medium even further and so the concept of the Silly Symphonies short subject films were realized with the release in 1929 of The Skeleton Dance. Within the animation industry, the series is most noted for its use by Walt Disney as a platform for experimenting with processes, techniques, characters, and stories in order to further the art of animation. It also provided a venue to try out techniques and technologies, special effects animation, and dramatic storytelling in animation. This would be crucial to Disney's plans to eventually begin making feature-length animated films. In 1931 after the release of 22 groundbreaking Silly Symphony shorts Walt would produce another short subject masterpiece titled, The Spider and the Fly. In this tale, a kitchen is filled with flies. A spider wakes up and plays its web like a harp, attracting a pair of flies; the female fly is trapped, and the male summons the cavalry, which arrives riding bees and butterflies and begins to drop pepper spray bombs and fire champagne bottles at the spider. After they succeed in setting the spider's web on fire, the spider falls and is trapped on sticky flypaper ending his reign of terror over the flies. In this lot we have a fantastic background layout drawing from The Spider and the Fly. The piece is attributed to the hand of Dick Williams, an animator and assistant Director that would work on 15 Silly Symphony shorts. The artwork is beautifully detailed in graphite on 12 field 2-peghole animation paper and can be seen around the 5:25 mark in the film. This original one-of-a-kind piece of production art is over 75 years old! Slight toning of the paper due to age, normal handling and two small tears in the top of the piece away from the image area; otherwise, the artwork is in Very Good condition.
