Rocky and Bullwinkle Gag Painting by Bill Hurtz (Jay Ward, c. 1990s). "Hokey Smokes, Bullwinkle!" Our favorite cartoon moose is about to take a giant step, in this whimsical gag painting by Bill Hurtz (1919 - 2000). Mr. Hurtz was an animator, character designer, producer, and director for Disney, UPA, and many other studios. He is best known for his work as one of the main directors at Jay Ward Studios, where he also the employee who stayed the longest. He began in the late 1950s and worked there right up to the end on Captain Crunch commercials. He was the main artist used in the 1990s for Universal Studios Jay Ward Studio Merchandise, Macy's Day Parade merchandise that promoted Bullwinkle, and was the man who did the box artwork for the first release for Rocky and Bullwinkle VHS tapes. He also did a great deal of work on the Bullwinkle Taco Bell Promotion. He began in the business as Art Babbitt's assistant and was soon thrown out at Disney over that affiliation (Mr. Babbitt was one of the leaders in the 1941 Disney Animators Strike). He later said his parody on Fractured Fairy Tales "Sleeping Beauty Land" was his favorite work at Jay Ward Studios. This original Rocky and Bullwinkle gag painting was most likely done for Universal Studio merchandise. Art is in ink and watercolor on paper. Images are 3" and 5". Framed with Plexiglas, matted with an opening size of 11" x 9" with an overall frame size of 20" x 16". The artwork is hand-signed by Bill Hurtz in the bottom right corner. Original artwork of these characters by one of the show's directors is rare. Very Good condition.
