Description

Ranma ½ Opening Title Sequence Storyboard and Animation Drawing Group of 26 (Studio Deen, c. 1989-96). There is something extraordinary in watching a finished animated clip with the storyboards at hand and flipping through the pages as the animation plays on the screen. Being able to see how the process began and the finalized product simultaneously is reserved mostly for the members of the animation team that worked on the scenes. With this lot, we present the chance to look at the sensational pencil work executed by the skillful storyboard artist team of Studio Deen for the classic anime series Ranma ½. The first set of storyboards was used to create the second opening sequence for the show, including paste-in photocopies from the manga and outstanding pencil drawings that were then animated perfectly into the final animated sequence. The second set of storyboards depicts an intro scene used to recapitulate the main events of the manga, leaving no element of the story behind; they show Ranma practicing martial arts, as his dad in panda form takes him to the Tendous' house, the families bringing Akane and Ranma together and promptly showing mutual dislike, and Ranma's transformation into a girl. The third set illustrates two of the eye-catches used for commercial breaks, presenting with limited pictures the hilarious gags used for these quick animation sequences. The storyboards are attributed to the great storyboard artist Yuji Moriyama, who worked on Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Bleach, and Naruto, among many other anime titles. All drawings of the storyboard are rendered in graphite, and they include some paste-in photocopies. Additionally included is a model sheet depicting Akane Tendou in graphite with many animators' notes and a fabulous drawing of female Ranma done with ink and attributed to Hiroaki Goda, who is recognized for his work in anime series like Bubblegum Crisis, Oh! My Goddess, and the new Evangelion movies. With 22 storyboards, two photocopies of the titles used in production, and two drawings from the animation team, this lot is an astonishing collection of great art by the talented team behind one of the most emblematic anime series. The storyboards show light handling wear from production with some crumpling, folds, and wrinkling. The drawings present some folding and crumpling on the corners, and some of the photocopies and paste-ins have lightly toned tape. The overall condition of this lot is Very Good.
